10 Strangest Ever Sunderland Signings

By Jack G King /

7. Nyron Nosworthy

Few would have predicted that one of the biggest cult heroes in Sunderland's modern history would be an unassuming (if solid) right back who arrived from Gillingham in 2005. A decade later, Nyron's name still rings out around the Stadium of Light - and for good reason. The defender turned out to be one of the most committed, good-natured, and ultimately beloved players of a generation. Originally signed as backup for Steven Wright, Nosworthy was thrust into the first team as a result of injury. He couldn't help prevent relegation under Mick McCarthy, but a move to centre back under new boss Roy Keane saw a boost in confidence and promotion back to the Premier League. He was unfortunately phased out of the team by Steve Bruce, a process which broke the hearts of thousands across Wearside.
