10 Sunderland Cult Heroes From The Premier League Era

By Michael Potts /

9. Ji Dong Won

Ji Dong Won's Sunderland career was a rollercoaster to say the least. First of all, he was a rare product of the Black Cats dipping into the South Korean K-League. He proved to be a classic 'YouTube' player, with immense strings of highlights of the striker slamming home volleys, precise finishes and neat flicks. Had Sunderland really unearthed a diamond? Well, no. He endured several ineffectual substitute performances, and never really got a chance to shine in red and white, but at times, he looked so far out of his league it was laughable. However, for one of the greatest moments in the Stadium of Light's history, Ji will forever remain a cult hero. After a heroic team performance, Sunderland held the usually rampant Manchester City to a 0-0 scoreline, but with just four seconds of injury time to go, Ji rounded Joe Hart and calmly slotted home the winner. It was a blistering moment, one that will live long in the memories of those who witnessed it.
