10 Things UFC Wants You To Forget About Matt Hughes

By Sam Heard /

5. Padded Record

Matt Hughes record of 45-9 makes him seem like one of the toughest men to have ever fought in the Octagon, losing a minor 20% of his fights despite being at the top-end of the UFC for a large portion of his fighting career. With wins against ex-champions like B.J Penn, Georges St. Pierre and Matt Serra, it would be wrong to say that Hughes isn€™t one of the greatest UFC welterweights ever. However, his deep record which makes B.J Penn€™s 16-9 look somewhat abysmal is quite misleading. Many of Matt Hughes€™ wins amassed in the earlier part of his career were against cans who would never have been remotely close to being UFC-calibre fighters. A brief examination of Hughes€™ record revels how poor some of these fighters were. With wins over Hiromitsu Kanehara (19-27), Scott Johnson (5-21), Erick Snyder (2-8), Craig Quick (0-1), Joe Guist (0-2) and Bruce Nelson (25-36) to name but a few - the UFC hall of famer€™s record suddenly seems rather less impressive. The UFC would rather that their welterweight legend€™s padded record were to be forgotten by the MMA community.
