Luis Figo's decision to swap Barcelona for Madrid in the summer of 2000 dented the pride of a region and plunged Barca supporters into a state of despair. After 172 La Liga games for Barcelona, 30 goals, two league titles, two Copa del Reys and a Cup Winners' Cup success, the elegant midfielder and star of Euro 2000 provoked fury in Catalunya when honouring his agreement with Madrid president Florentino Perez and joining Madrid. Barcelona were left helpless as Madrid placed a bid of £37.5million and activated the player's buy-out clause. It would mark the start of Perez's big money signings including Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo and David Beckham. In 2002, the Barcelona ultras threw missiles, golf balls, lighters and a pig's head at Figo as he went to take a corner. He remains a figure of hate at the Camp Nou and, when returning as an Inter official for a Champions League semi-final in April 2010, he was subjected to further abuse.
