Gaining the nickname Psycho more or less sums Pearce up, and the famous image of all his passion streaming out after his successful penalty against Spain at Euro 96 remains one of the great sporting images of all time. Famous for both his free-kicks and tough tackles, along with his ability to burst forward; Pearce was a consummate defender, and undoubtedly the best left-back of his generation. Psycho made 78 appearances for England, and whilst never being described as dirty, Pearce almost became the personification of hard during his career, spent mainly with Nottingham Forest, with spells at Newcastle, West Ham, Manchester City and Coventry.
