UFC 189 was set to be the biggest event in years - possibly since UFC 100, the best selling UFC event of all time, which featured the likes of Brock Lesnar and Georges St. Pierre all fighting on a single, illustrious card. Interest in a UFC event has never been as high since that July 2009 event - but that was to change this coming weekend when Irish superstar Conor McGregor, the hottest thing going in MMA at the moment, took on featherweight champion Jose Aldo in MMA's version of Mayweather vs. Pacquiao. In fact, McGregor vs. Aldo looked like it would top that, at least in terms of fight action: after a multi-week promotional tour that included McGregor snatching Aldo's belt away from him and antagonizing the champion for hours on end, it was set to be a violent bloodbath between two men with real animosity towards each other. Would the cocky Irish fighter be able to overcome the entrenched Brazilian champion? Fans won't be finding out any time soon. Just weeks away from the fight, Aldo was injured, taking a kick to the ribs from a training partner he hadn't previously worked with. While that screams poor training habits, it resulted in a mini controversy: doctors in America said Aldo's ribs were bruised and he could fight. Doctors in Brazil said they were broken, and he could not. Aldo himself stayed mum at first, but after attempting to return to training, he pulled out of the fight. Luckily, the UFC had a back-up plan in former two-time title challenger Chad Mendes, so McGregor will still fight - but is it the bout fans want to see? No, but that hasn't stopped the event from passing the record for highest UFC box office of all time, a record that was smashed even after Aldo's name was dropped from the card. And lost in all the hoopla over McGregor and Aldo has been the fact that Robbie Lawler will defend his welterweight title against Canadian challenger and GSP teammate Rory MacDonald in a title fight that could also turn out to be a classic. And so the UFC pushes on with its biggest card in years. Here are five predictions you can take to the bank!
