5 Reasons Why Everton Must Stand By Roberto Martinez

5. He€™s Brought Attractive Football To Goodison Park

Let€™s make no bones about it, Everton€™s defensive record has been woeful of late. They€™ve shipped more goals at home than other side in the top flight and are about as capable as holding onto a lead as your great grandmother walking a hyperactive bull mastiff. But there€™s no denying that Martinez has brought attractive, fast-paced football to Goodison. Playmaker Ross Barkley is a creative force in the final third, the magic feet of Gerard Deulofeu leaves defenders€™ legs in knots on the right wing, and Romelu Lukaku is the most prolific striker to don a Blue shirt in recent memory, a complete-package forward who€™d grace any frontline in the world. Yes, you could drive a convoy of tanks through the gaping holes in the Everton rear guard, but there€™s a solid platform to build on. The Toffees are among the division€™s top scorers at home and on the road - and if they address their much-publicised defensive frailties, there€™s no reason why they can€™t compete with the best under Martinez. With the natural talent of John Stones and the experience of veteran Phil Jagielka making up the spine of the Blues€™ back line, it€™s not a change of personnel that€™s needed but a change of mentality, along with some serious work on the training ground. It€™s about time Martinez and Everton started taking their defensive responsibilities more seriously.
