Lewis first two seasons in Formula One were something of a revelation; narrowly missing out on the Drivers Championship in his first season, he managed to snatch it on the last corner of the second. He is, quite simply, one of the greatest drivers in history, and certainly on a par with current drivers Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel; look no further than the 2008 British Grand Prix for an example of his excellence. Hamilton was unfortunate this season not to have seriously challenged for the title, having taken a new mentality into the new year; however, a cacophony of car failures, mistakes from other drivers, and a slowish car meant that he finished outside of the top few. Unlike the rest of the names on this list, there is still time for Lewis to take home this coveted prize. After ending his stint with McLaren, Hamilton is headed to Mercedes for 2013 possibly with an eye on the rule changes coming in for the 2014 season. He will be hoping that Ross Brawn can do for him what he did for Michael Schumacher in the early 2000s; however, with the record that Mercedes took into the end of last season, it remains to be seen whether or not this will be the case.
