The mid 1990s to early 2000s days when England had the reassuring presence of Gary Neville, Ashley Cole, Stuart Pearce, Graeme Le Saux and Lee Dixon in full-back positions are gone. England now like most nations in the world are suffering from the tendency of modern full-backs being unusually strong as attackers, but are either downright poor or questionable defensively. All of England's full-backs namely: Leighton Baines, Kyle Walker, Glen Johnson, Luke Shaw, Kieran Gibbs, Nathaniel Clyne, Micah Richards, Martin Kelly, Carl Jenkinson, Jon Flanagan and Danny Rose - are somewhat deficient in this area. This situation is the first reason why England currently look vulnerable with a traditional back four system. But a lot of the aforementioned names would be perfectly suited to playing as wing-backs, where their attacking prowess would be better utilized. England's defensive shaped would be better balanced if those full-backs are given such freedom, instead of being shoehorned into a back four system and everyone constantly criticizing their defensive skills prematurely.
