8 Football Teams Which Went The Whole Season Undefeated
2. Steaua Bucharest (1987 - 88, 1988 - 89)
In the mid to late ‘80s, Steaua Bucharest were one of the best teams in Europe – taking home the European Cup in the 1985/86 campaign and finishing as runners-up just three years later. And during this inimitable era in the club’s legacy were two undefeated seasons… back to back. Not only were Steaua able to pull off the near-impossible once but they did it twice in a row during the 1987/88 and 1988/89 campaigns.
Even more incredible than this brace of invincibility, however, is the unbeaten run they were able to rack up along the way which tallied a whopping (wait for it) 104 games. Over a century of football matches played – that’s 9360 minutes of play, not including stoppage time – without suffering a solitary defeat. It’s just incredible and is a European record that still stands today, and one we're unlikely to see broken any time soon.
While Steaua have remained a constant threat in their homeland, their position as a power in European competition was lost when the Romanian Revolution of 1989 opened the doors for Romanian footballers to leave and play abroad, causing them (and their city rivals) to lose a huge number of players.
