8 Bundesliga Sleeping Giants Who Could Topple Bayern Munich

Is it time that some of the former great German sides start to compete again?

Many have tried and failed to topple Bayern Munich at the summit of the Bundesliga, who have just won their 24th league title. Before Bayern's dominance, a number of clubs were successful in the league, such as 1.FC Köln and 1.FC Nürnburg who dominated much of the first two decades since the Bundesliga's formations in 1963. Many world class players have come and gone in the Bundesliga, such as Oliver Kahn, Uli Stein, Gerd Müller, Ulf Kirsten, Stefan Kuntz and Klaus Allofs, yet the German league still remains one of the most watched today. In recent times, Borussia Dortmund and VfL Wolfsburg have come the closest clubs to knocking Bayern off their perch, whilst Borussia Mönchengladbach and Dortmund are the closest to the Bavarian side in terms of titles, with five Bundesliga's apiece. With the Bayern squad ageing, the gap between first and second is getting closer and it will only be a matter of time until we have a new champion - question remains, will it be a sleeping giant?
