Undeterred by his Swansea rejection, Matthews trialled instead with fierce rivals Cardiff, earning himself a youth contract. He worked his way up the ranks before signing a professional deal in 2009, making his professional debut at the age of 17. He was initially given a chance due to injuries in the Cardiff squad, but quickly made the right back position his own, becoming a member of the first team almost overnight.
