9 Newcastle Fans Who Should Have Played For The Club
3. Jack Charlton
Like his brother, Jack Charlton slipped through the fingers of his hometown.
The Ashington-born centre-half went on the play 35 times for his country and over 600 times for Leeds United in a united one-club marriage for the duration of his playing career. He was not as gifted as kid brother, but he was still a top centre-half and an obstacle that strikers didn’t fancy having to get past when they arrived at the daunting fortress that was Elland Road.
He would return to Newcastle for a brief stint as manager in 1984 prior to his ten-year spell as Ireland boss, but the 6ft 3in centre-half never did pull on that coveted black and white kit.
“There’s only one club in the world I’ll leap off my feet for if they score.” - Jack Charlton, May 2015.
Considering the man has entered his 80’s now, it’s probably for the best that they’ve been doing so poorly lately.
