Arsenal 2–0 Crystal Palace - 5 Things We Learned

2. Arsenal's Campaign Hinges On Giroud

"He doesn't score enough goals", is one of the most stated facts of the season. Granted this is true. But Giroud is just one of many modern strikers who due to the 4-5-1 system in which they play will not score as many goals as strikers in a classic 4-4-2. That's not to defend Giroud, he still should score more than he does and on the big stages, but goal scoring is but one facet of his play. Giroud's real worth is his ability to link with the midfield, draw the centre backs out and allow his wingers to move in behind him to the space he has created. He is strong, great at holding the ball out and at Palace he did all these things that often go unnoticed as good as any lone-striker has this season. So you see the problem Arsenal will face if he falls foul to injury. Who do they have to replace him? Nicklas Bendtner? The Dane has the physical stature but not the maturity or discipline to fill Giroud's boots. Will Arsene's failure to bring in a suitable centre forward prove the vital factor in who rules the roost in English football come May?
