Arsenal Transfer News: Gonzalo Higuain Edging Toward Gunners Move

By Joseph Dempsey /

Arsenal target Gonzalo Higuain is edging toward a move to the Emirates, according to the Metro. Manager Arsene Wenger has made the Real Madrid forward his top transfer target this summer having conceded defeat in the race to sign Fiorentina's Stevan Jovetic and Manchester United's Wayne Rooney. Although formal negotiations with Madrid officials are yet to take place, the Gunners are hopeful a deal can be struck for the Argentinian international. Higuain has already told the club he wants to leave and despite interest from Juventus and Atletico Madrid, he has instructed his agent to negotiate with Arsenal first. Real have held low-level talks with the Italians but the 25-year old, who scored 16 league goals last season, would prefer to work under Wenger in North London. If the Gunners can match his £150,000-per-week wage demands, a deal could go through swiftly, but there are a couple of stumbling blocks to hurdle first - one of which is Real's asking price. The Spanish giants are demanding £25 million for the star while Italian paper Tuttosport claim Arsenal will not go any higher than £20 million. The second stumbling block is the fact Real are currently manager-less. The club's hierarchy would prefer to wait until the successor to Jose Mourinho - thought to be Carlo Ancelotti - is installed before deciding on Higuain's future.
