Arsenal Transfer News: Wenger To Rival Toon For Cut-Price Diame

By Simon Gallagher /

MailOnline, Arsenal are set to rival Newcastle United for the January acquisition of West Ham's highly-rated Senegalese midfielder Mohamed Diame, though the report suggests that the Magpies have emerged as favourites to sign the former Wigan man. The 25-year-old midfielder, who put in a sterling performance against the Magpies in West Ham's 0-1 victory at St James Park a few weeks ago has a release clause of £3.5million in his contract, and could be on his way out of the London club if one of his rumoured suitors choose to activate the clause. The Mail also suggest that though Arsenal have shown interest in the Senegal international, their main priority at the minute is a striker, and Schalke's Klaas Jan Huntelaar is at the top of their list. Diame joined West Ham this summer on a free after his release by Wigan Athletic, having played for Rayo Vallecano previously. He played for Wigan for three seasons, building a reputation as a high-energy defensive midfielder with a range of passes - and his performances so far this season have further built that reputation. What do you think Arsenal fans? Should Arsene Wenger sign Diame? Share your thoughts below.
