The Brazil international is reportedly prepared to take a pay-cut for the chance to play at the Nou Camp, although the Catalans are yet to agree a transfer fee with his current employers.

Paulinho, who has spent the last two years in the Chinese Super League, endured a difficult time during his last spell in Europe, where he struggled to make an impact at Tottenham.

But Barcelona have earmarked the 28-year-old as a player who can add depth to their midfield ranks, with Andres Iniesta - having turned 33 in May - now unable to feature every week.

The club have been heavily linked to Marco Verratti, and many believed the purported interest in Paulinho may have been a decoy to gain leverage over Paris Saint-Germain at the negotiating table.

However, it now appears that both players are on the Catalans' radar, as they look to revamp their squad after a disappointing campaign last season.

Incoming manager Ernesto Valverde has already seen Everton's Gerard Deulofeu added to his side, with defender Jeremy Mathieu among those to depart.
