The new French midfielder, who signed from Montpellier on transfer deadline day, came off the bench for his Spurs debut on the 70 minute mark at the Stadium of Light. "Benji", as he is affectionately known, dived in to the game, making five successful challenges during his appearance - more than any other player in the Spurs team did all game - but the match ended in disappointment thanks to Harry Kane€™s unfortunate late own goal giving Sunderland an unlikely point. About his debut, Stambouli had this to say:

It was a powerful game with a good rhythm and not the easiest for my first appearance. We are all disappointed but Sunderland showed real spirit to come back. I think we should have won this game but hopefully next time, we will do it. I feel good, I feel positive and I will now work hard again to be ready to play.
Stambouli was clearly a back-up plan for Spurs, with the club having failed in a bid to bring Southampton's Morgan Schneiderlin to White Hart Lane for a reunion with Mauricio Pochettino but, on this performance, the new signing looks to be a shrewd one - though it is obviously very early days. At just £4.7 million, the combative midfield enforcer could turn out to be an absolute bargain and, if he continues to impress and make such an impact in the Premier League, he will surely get some senior international recognition for France very soon.
