Chelsea Transfer News: Barcelona Want David Luiz

By Simon Gallagher /

MailOnline, Spanish giants Barcelona are keen to revive their interest in Chelsea's David Luiz this summer, with coach Tito Vilanova keen to strengthen his defence, despite captain Carles Puyol signing a new deal recently. The Mail say Luiz has struggled for form recently, as Chelsea have had a difficult season under Roberto DiMatteo and Rafa Benitez, and that he was on the list of transfer targets under discussion when Vilanova met with sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta, technical secretary Albert Valentín and football co-ordinator Narcis Julià in New York this week. That list also included Luiz's compatriot Neymar, whose move would spark something of a transfer merry-go-round, with David Villa allowed to leave the Catalan club - which should interest Arsene Wenger considering his winter attempts to sign the Spanish forward (according to the Metro.) Is Luiz leaves, he would join up with two former Gunners, in the shape of Alex Song and Cesc Fabregas, though Portuguese paper A Bola have stated that Chelsea would be reluctant to sell one of their assets to their European rivals. That report (as quoted by the Mail) suggests that if they were to let him leave for Barca, Roman Abramovich would look to recoup a large portion of the £21m transfer fee they spent on him in 2011. Chelsea's season has been one of transition this year, with new squad members coming in and the under-performance of key individuals like Fernando Torres, and they currently sit third in the Premier League. Their qualification for the Champions League is the bare minimum of expectations, but if they fail, they might see some of their key talents and targets looking elsewhere.
