Chelsea are on the verge of breaking their club transfer record after agreeing a £70m deal for Real Madrid forward Alvaro Morata, according to The Guardian.

The player is now on his way to London to discuss personal terms and conduct a medical, and is expected to earn £150,000 a week on a five-year contract.

The Blues will pay an initial £58m for the Spanish international, potentially rising to £70m with add-ons, shattering the record £50m they paid for Fernando Torres in 2011.

Morata's signing would represent a significant breakthrough for Chelsea, who are currently short of numbers up front. The out of favour Diego Costa is in talks to return to Atletico Madrid, leaving coach Antonio Conte with only Michy Batshuayi and Loic Remy as viable senior options. The club missed out on top target Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United last week, but this deal should end their striker hunt.

A product of Real's youth system, Morata returned to Madrid after a two-year stint with Juventus last summer. He featured primarily as a squad player, but scored 20 goals from 43 appearances in all competitions, despite playing second fiddle to Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, and co.
