Crystal Palace 3-1 West Bromwich Albion: Pulis Praises Debutants, Mel Calls Penalty Laughable

By Josh Challies /

Crystal Palace manager Tony Pulis praised his January signings after witnessing his side secure a vital three points against West Brom. Tom Ince, who arrived on loan from Blackpool on deadline day, opened the scoring before fellow debutant Joe Ledley headed home a goal of his own. Pulis said:
"The biggest thing about Tom was his work. He scored and got an assist. We're pleased for him, Scott Dann and Joe Ledley who were all superb today." "I'm pleased for our entire group of players and it's them who decide whether we can stay in the division."
A huge moment in the match was Marouane Chamkh's penalty, which restored the Eagles two goal advantage. Pulis believed the right decision was made but that Ben Foster didn't deserve a red card. He said:
"Ben did catch him, it's his momentum that got the foul. The referee made the right decision." "I'm not a great advocate in sending people off. The fans want to see 11 v 11 and the crowd were fantastic today."
Speaking shortly afterwards in Spanish, West Brom manager Pepe Mel spoke of his anger after what he believed to be a poor refereeing decision for his opponents penalty. He said:
"The penalty decision was laughable. If it was a penalty, then it should have been a red card. It stopped us coming back in the game." "In the previous piece of play we had a great chance. It was an error from the referee and the decision cost us."
The manager was also furious with the display from his side in the first half, which was an uncharacteristic performance from his side. He also spoke about the challenges ahead. Mel said:
"I'm extremely angry. We gifted it to them in the first half. If we played like we did in the second half we would've had three more points right now." "We have 13 cup finals and 13 battles. The players must join me on these battles, the first thing is to try and win on Tuesday."
The result lifted Palace three points above the relegation zone, while West Brom drop into the bottom three after West Ham's victory over Aston Villa.
