A lot of attention has been paid to the controversy surrounding Rio Ferdinand's snub. Added to that, England were deprived of Gary Cahill by injury days before the tournament began. And yet, Joleon Lescott and the under-pressure John Terry performed dependably together at the back on only their fifth appearance as a pairing for England. The Man City man even grabbed the side's first-half goal. It's true that they weren't tested that much by a mostly anonymous Benzema, but even still they seemed settled and, again, confident. It would be foolish to start making lofty predictions, but perhaps this draw shows that the climate of doom and gloom has overstated the weakness of this England team.
