Everton Transfer Window 2012 Preview

With available funds a scarcity, how will David Moyes guide his Everton team through this month's potentially hazardous transfer window?

What They Need

Moyes has already brought in probably his most important player, with American Landon Donovan rejoining the club for a two month temporary association while the MLS is in its close season. Donovan is an eye-catching acquisition, able to play in multiple positions at the head of the pitch and with goals a big part of how he plays. If the Scottish manager can look into bringing in further clever loan deals, in the same vein as Donovan and Royston Drenthe, then there are options available without the need to spend any money. But there will be a lot of competition for those sort of players, and Everton don't have the pulling power they once had - as evidenced by Rory Donnelly's decision to go to Swansea rather than join up with Moyes' men. Everything changes if Everton sell someone - that is the only option for raising any cash, and if David Moyes can generate around £15-£20m from the sale of one of their most saleable commodities (fans will no doubt cringe every time Rodwell is mentioned on Sky Sports this month) then they can look to bring in two or three immediately impactful players, as well as perhaps a couple of unknowns to flesh out the squad. But what Everton need more than anything is investment from outside, and a transfer kitty to allow Moyes to strengthen and stop the club stagnating as a perennially mid-table outfit.

Outgoing?

Probably not a great deal to be done here - Moyes doesn't have the luxury of a massive squad, so there are few fringe players to consider expendable. There are however, a number of star attractions at Everton who may attract interest from other clubs, with Leighton Baines, Jack Rodwell and Phil Jagielka looking the most likely to catch the eyes of prospective buyers. Everton will do well to keep hold of all three, and if February comes with none having left, and potential attention deflected from young prospect Ross Barkley, who will be a very important player in the Premiership for some years, then Moyes can probably count his window to have been a success. So Toffees fans, who would you like to see brought in to the club, given the available funds (or lack of), and who should be sold to make way for new blood? Let us know below.
