With seven recognised centre-backs as part of their first-team squad, it always looked likely that Manchester United may be looking to shift one or two of those defenders before the transfer window slams shut.

Now, ESPN’s Rob Dawson is reporting that talks are ongoing about Marcos Rojo departing Old Trafford and heading to Everton.

As Dawson explains, talks are currently taking place at United’s Carrington training complex about a potential move to Goodison Park – with Everton keen to take the player on a season-long loan, while the Red Devils would prefer a permanent deal.

The 29-year-old Argentina international has had a mixed time of it at United after arriving from Sporting Lisbon in 2014.

After a promising start to his Red Devils career, the tough-tackling, no-nonsense left-footer has struggled with form and injuries – to the point where last season he was restricted to just five Premier League appearances.

With Rojo contracted to United until June 2021, the Manchester club will be keen to recoup a large chunk of the £18 million fee that they initially paid for the defender should Everton be open to a permanent move for the player.

After signing Harry Maguire from Leicester City this week, Manchester United currently have Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Eric Bailly, Axel Tuanzebe and Rojo on their books when it comes to the centre-back positions.
