Defensive warhorse Gary Naysmith was an instant hit with Evertonians after arriving from Hearts in the Walter Smith era, earning the nickname El Blanco Carlos, a reference to world-class Brazilian wing-back Roberto Carlos. But his 2004-05 campaign was one of anguish, as a long-term ankle injury saw him lose his place in the team to Pistone. Believe it or not, this old dog still plays semi-professionally, occasionally turning out for Scottish League One outfit East Fife, where he serves as player-manager.
