Football's 11 Most Expensive Transfers - By Position
9. Centre Back: Virgil Van Dijk - £75 Million
We're back in Merseyside for another mammoth fee paid by Liverpool.
You can trace Liverpool's defensive woes back to 2013, when legend Jamie Carragher retired. The team had issues before then, but Carrragher maintained some level of composure at the back, and helped the Reds stay in the top four. Following his departure, things steadily went downhill for Liverpool, with defensive issues cropping up every other game.
Jurgen Klopp identified the solution to their issues in the form of Virgil van Dijk. After a bloated transfer saga with Southampton, Liverpool got their man - breaking the record fee for a defender in the process. Some people questioned the £75 million fee, given that van Dijk had spent most of the 2016/17 season on the bench for Southampton. However, he immediately made an impact for Liverpool and has helped straighten the defence into one of the best in the league. It's hard to put a price on that kind of talent and leadership.
