It's understood that no deal has been made as yet, though City are working hard to push the move through as they look to strengthen one of their team's few weaknesses.
In addition to sending Brazil's Danilo the other way, Juventus will also demand a transfer fee for the 25-year-old.
The versatile Cancelo was part of the Portugal team which won the Nations League this summer, though he was not involved in the final.
Since joining Juventus from rivals Inter last summer, he has occupied a number of roles, playing both left-back and right-wing in addition to his usual position.
Danilo arrived at the Etihad Stadium in 2017 from Real Madrid, for £26.5m. He has made just 34 appearances over the last two years as part of the Citizen's back-to-back Premier League winning squads.
