Man City Transfers: Benjamin Mendy Set For £52m Move To Eastlands
Fee would eclipse City's previous transfer record.
Manchester City look set once again to smash their every-spiraling transfer record with a mooted £52m deal for Monaco full-back Benjamin Mendy.
According to BBC Sport, Pep Guardiola's side are said to have agreed terms with the Principality club for Mendy, 23, a France international who was instrumental in his team's unexpected charge to Ligue 1 glory last season.
The ludicrous reported fee surpasses the equally ridiculous sum of £45m paid for Kyle Walker earlier this month, as well as topping John Stones' similarly belief-beggaring £47.5m price-tag from last summer - City's previous most expensive purchase.
Despite potentially being the all-time record signing of a club with arguably the deepest pockets in football, the Mendy fee wouldn't even be the second biggest in the Premier League this summer. Chelsea broke their own mammoth transfer record with the £60m signing of Alvaro Morata earlier this week, whilst Manchester United followed up last year's extravagent splurge on Paul Pogba with the relatively modest outlay of £75m for Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku.
Mendy's arrival would push City's spending up to just over £175m for the window, with "three of four" more to come according to an evidently greedy Guardiola.
Food for thought: in 1996, £175m could have bought you an entire team of Alan Shearers. He used to play in goal, so it may have worked out brilliantly.
