Man Utd Transfer News: Nampalys Mendy To Sign On Free Transfer

By Joseph Dempsey /

Metro. Reports in French media claim Mendy has rejected a contract extension with the newly-promoted Ligue 1 outfit and now seeks a fresh challenge in England and at Old Trafford. The 20-year old defensive midfielder will become Moyes' second signing as United manager following the capture of Uruguayan right-back Guillermo Varela from Atlético Peñarol. Mendy, who has drawn comparisons with former Chelsea star Claude Makelele, told boss Claudio Ranieri of his desire to leave this summer amid fears his playing time would become limited thanks to Monaco's high-profile acquisitions of midfielders James Rodriguez and Joao Moutinho. Ranieri was said to have been left "stunned" by the player's revelation, after fielding him 31 times last season. The former Chelsea boss said:

"I do not understand his attitude. As soon as I saw him play, I said here is our Makelele. I trusted him and I played him. "I think he will miss out on a great deal. But it€™s his life, not mine. He has preferred to listen to his brother and agent and not his coach. It€™s a shame."
Mendy helped France€™s under-21 side secure third place in the Toulon tournament on Saturday with a 2-1 victory over Portugal. It is currently unknown what plans Moyes holds for the Frenchman and whether or not he will remain at Old Trafford next season or go out on loan for more first team experience.
