As Manchester United vent their frustrations about United’s lack of big-name deadline day moves, Twitter has seen Red Devils fans get #WoodwardOut trending.

This summer has seen United sign Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James, while Romelu Lukaku is today edging ever-closer to finalising £75 million move to Inter Milan.

With the Belgium international heading for the Old Trafford exit door, many United fans had expected their team to have a big-money replacement lined up to replace Rom.

The Old Trafford club is crying out for some creativity and a sense of directness in the final third, and mooted transfers for the likes of Paulo Dybala, Christian Eriksen, and Bruno Fernandes all seem to be off – with the only player United are sniffing around today being Juventus’ 33-year-old striker Mario Mandzukic.

To be fair to the Croatian World Cup finalist, Mandzukic could be a smart buy if the price is reasonable, with his experience and hold-up play meaning he has a lot to offer United. But still, Mandzukic is far from the glamorous big-money signing that fans had been hoping for.

Since arriving at the Theatre of Dreams seven years ago - especially since taking over from David Gill six years ago - Ed Woodward has been the man responsible for pushing United forward in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson years as the club looked to return to its glory days.

Instead, the team has gone through four managers in that period and seen botched moves for so many top-tier players at various spells. And when United have managed to sign a big-name player, they’ve often been held over a barrel – such as the ginormous wages paid to proverbial bench warmer Alexis Sanchez.

The club and Woodward have seen fit to change manager four times over this spell, with the man in the dugout deemed the reason for United’s problems, but fans are making it clear that they held Ed Woodward more culpable than any of David Moyes, Louis Van Gaal or Jose Mourinho.

In fact, a prime example of Woodward’s incompetence is the fact that he refused to allow Mourinho to pay £60 million for Harry Maguire last summer… only to now fork out £80 million for the player just this week.

To give an example of the unrest amongst United fans on what looks like being yet another disappointing transfer deadline day, here are a few choice social media messages for Woodward.

It seems that Manchester United fans’ anger at Ed Woodward seems to only increase with every passing season, and it’s going to take something major before today’s 5pm transfer deadline to get the Old Trafford faithful back on-side. And even then, one or two big-money buys today would simply paper over the cracks of what has been a painful shambles of a six years for English football’s biggest club.
