Man Utd Transfers: Robert Lewandowski Could Join For FREE?

By Joseph Dempsey /

according to general manager Hans-Joachim Watzke. The Polish international has been linked with Manchester United for quite some time with reports suggesting late last year that a deal had already been struck for the player for around £12 million. Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc confirmed last week that the star would not be renewing his deal at Dortmund and would leave either "this summer or next". However, Watzke has claimed the player could see out his contract with the club before leaving on a free in 2014.

"I assume that Lewandowski will stay at Borussia Dortmund beyond this season. "The fact that Robert wasn't willing to extend his contract means he will most likely leave the club, at the very least at the end of his current deal. "I have a very good relationship with Robert Lewandowski and I know he's a totally good character. He will give everything for BVB for as long as he'll be playing for us."
Watzke then insinuated that the club are not desperate to sell their star man and are in good financial shape. He added:
"We don't necessarily depend on the transfer sum Robert might generate, if it gives us the possibility to be successful again next season. "This year, we have already generated ‚40 million in the Champions League, which is much more than we could ever yield with a Robert Lewandowski transfer. "However, if a club would pay a very high price, then we will think about the offer."
German giants Bayern Munich are also monitoring developments and soon-to-be new manager Pep Guardiola has been rumoured to be drawing up a transfer wish list ahead of taking charge of the club in the summer. Juventus are also believed to be interested in the player while there have even been reports that City may make an offer too. However, bookmakers Sky Bet make Bayern Munich favourites to sign Lewandowski this summer.
