Man Utd Transfers: Van Gaal In For Di Maria & Alex Song

Barcelona defensive midfielder identified as alternative to Vidal.

With only two first team signings made this summer, Man Utd are in danger of starting from a defensive position, catching up on their closest rivals, even with a new era promised under Louis Van Gaal. As things stand, Van Gaal will head into this season with largely the same first-team as faltered and floundered under David Moyes last year. Ander Herrera will strengthen the base of midfield, and Luke Shaw is a great long-term option at left-back, despite the manager expressing his concerns over the former Southampton prospect's fitness, but that is not enough. It's good news then that United have launched a £55m bid for Real Madrid's Angel di Maria, who is surplus to requirements in Madrid thanks to the arrivals of Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez to the Spanish club. The Express have stated that Di Maria prefers a move to France or England, but with Paris Saint-Germain out of the running thanks to his cost, the way is open for United to make their move. £55m is a ludicrous amount of money for an unwanted player, but Di Maria is supremely talented, and would be a hit in the Premier League - which he'd have to be to justify his mooted £120,000-potential wages. Meanwhile, Van Gaal will look to Barcelona and Alex Song if a potential move for Chilean midfielder Arturo Vidal fails to happen (as it has on several occasions throughout the summer). Juventus have told United they have a week to sign Vidal for £45m, but there are potential concerns over his fitness, which could see United move for the former Arsenal man, who has failed to make an impact at the Nou Camp. Should Man Utd sign Vidal or Song? And is Di Maria really worth £55m? Share your thoughts below in the comments thread.
