Manchester United vs Tottenham: 5 Key Battles

By Adam Fishwick /

1. Robin Van Persie vs. Jan Vertonghen

If there is one player that the Tottenham defence will not want to see on Sir Alex€™s team sheet, it is undoubtedly Robin Van Persie. The Dutchman has been in imperious form so far this season, having already notched up 5 goals in 5 league appearances for his new club. And he boasts an equally impressive individual record against Spurs, having scored five goals and setting up four more in his last six Premier League home games against Tottenham. But in Jan Vertonghen, Tottenham undoubtedly have one of the best young centre-backs in the league. Strong in the air and technically gifted, Vertonghen has appeared in all four of Tottenham€™s league games this season. No slouch in front of goal either, Vertonghen claimed his first goal in a Tottenham shirt against Carlisle in the Capital One Cup earlier this week. If the Belgian can handle the movement of Van Persie in and around the box, he is sure to frustrate the in-form front man.
