The second match of Newcastle United's three-game American tour saw The Magpies battle to a 1-0 victory over Sacramento Republic. James Kiffe scored an incredible, once-in-a-lifetime own-goal in the 48th minute to give United the slender victory. The defender showed shades of Alan Shearer vs. Everton to send a thunderous volley past his own keeper. Of course, there is a never a simple friendly where the black and whites are concerned. This one, in the sweltering California heat, saw that mind-boggling OG, a disallowed effort, a controversial red card no less, elbows, great saves, an apoplectic Steve McClaren oh, and a debut for the Magpies new £14.5 million man. And yet there's still some people on social media lamenting the contest for being a tad on the boring side... If the match deciding goal wasn't enough, unfortunately for Newcastle the game was overshadowed by the red card shown to Massadio Haidara. As the ball was played in the air across to the right, the left back went in with his studs high and planted them into the chest of Barrera. The referee went straight for his pocket and brandished the red card. Although it was dangerous it certainly didnt seem intentional. So despite that, and a number of openings for the home side even when United had a full compliment of players, McClaren came out with his second win in three pre-season games. Not bad going.
