Having already cut nine deals this summer, and with very little precedent of doing anything really positive in the final day of the transfer window, Newcastle fans could be forgiven for ignoring Sky Sports News and Twitter as much as possible but there may still be business to be done. According to David Craig, who is currently in residence outside Newcastle's training ground, Newcastle are still trying to sign Atletico Madrid's Belgian centre-half Toby Alderweireld, despite strong links to Southampton, and that they are one of the clubs who could be in for Jermain Defoe. Alderweireld is on the verge of leaving Atletico - with a loan move suggested - having seen his first-team opportunities restricted last year, and would suit Newcastle's need to strengthen at the back. It has been said that Newcastle would need to move players on first, but with Roma supposedly in for Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Crystal Palace interested in Steven Taylor, that could well not be a problem. Defoe meanwhile is being linked with a £7m move away from Toronto - despite having only just signed for them 5 months ago from Spurs. Harry Redknapp seems to be the front-runner, having already signed him twice, but Newcastle are among the teams considering a bid. At 32 years old, and that price he wouldn't fit the bill, but he does know how to score in the Premier League and that's precisely what Newcastle need. In terms of outgoings, there's further developments on the Ben Arfa saga, with an offer having been accepted. Turkish side Besiktas had come in for the Frenchman but the player himself turned the offer down. There remains interest in him from Birmingham City, but quite how he'd view making the step down remains to be seen. Would you be happy with Jermain Defoe signing for Newcastle?
