Newcastle Transfer News: Pires Tells Debuchy To Join Magpies

Former Arsenal man says Lille right-back would be perfectly suited to the Premier League

Former Arsenal and French international midfielder Robert Pires has urged compatriot Matheiu Debuchy to take the opportunity to play in the Premier League at Newcastle United with both hands. Debuchy, who put in some impressive performances for France at Euro 2012, has been on the Magpies' wanted list for some time now, with one reported bid of £4 million bid already turned down and an improved offer currently with Lille. The right-back is said to be interested in moving to Tyneside, as friend and former team-mate Yohan Cabaye currently plays for the club, but his impressive showing in Poland and Ukraine has tempted other European clubs to express interest in the full-back. Pires, who played in the Premier League for both Arsenal and Aston Villa, told Le 10 Sport (via Goal.com) that the move to the Premier League would be a good one for Debuchy:
"He has a game which really suits the Premier League with his speed. He also has such an attacking game, but is very aggressive in defence. If I have any advice to give him, it would be to try his luck in England."
The former Gunner, who spent 6 years at Highbury added that Newcastle would be the best possible option for Debuchy thanks to the large French contingent currently at the club:
"It does not really surprise me that English clubs are interested in him. Newcastle would be a very good club for him because he would find his friends Cabaye and Hatem Ben Arfa. Also, they are one of the top English clubs, with a history and a beautiful stadium. For him and the rest of his career, they would be a nice stepping stone."
While Newcastle fans might prefer the club not to be considered in such terms, to have a former player of Pires' stature suggesting St James' as an attractive destination for top French talent can be considered something of a compliment.
