Newcastle United are currently midway through an extremely important summer transfer window - and finally their first signing is through the door, with another very soon to follow. Having only just confirmed their Premier League status on the final day of last season, Mike Ashley came out and insisted he did not want a repeat of such a scenario during the 2015-16 campaign and would invest to ensure it would not happen again. Steve McClaren was unveiled as the Magpies' new boss last month but it took until a week gone Friday for Newcastle to announce their first signing of the summer - the £14.5 million acquisition of Georginio Wijnaldum from PSV Eindhoven. He is the Magpies' third most-expensive transfer in history, their first incoming in 335 days - and the biggest outlay Mike Ashley has ever lavished has been on the attacking-midfielder. Anderlecht's Aleksandar Mitrovic looks likely to follow imminently as things begin to hot up on Tyneside. Incredibly though, the Magpies continue to get linked to numerous players - with more than 100 (yes, that is correct) faces touted as potential Newcastle signings so far this window. Players will depart St James Park in the coming weeks, but equally, at least six incoming signings are wanted. Centre-backs, wingers and strikers are of the utmost priority, with at least two proven forwards wanted by the Magpies. As ever, plenty of players have been linked with a move to St James Park with no action coming out of the club at the time of writing this article. If United could get half of the players they have been linked with over that proverbial line, then next season could be a lot brighter than many could have ever expected. So here are all of the players Newcastle United have been linked to in the past week - there are some exciting, unusual (and also quite frankly ludicrous) names on the list - and exactly how whatculture.com/nufc reported the stories
