The comments follow newspaper reports earlier this week that claimed Newcastle United weren't prepared to offer their 2011/2012 top scorer Demba Ba a new contract at the end of the season, despite the player currently have a £7 million transfer release clause that would be activated if any club matched it. Ba currently has two years left to run on his reported £50,000 per week contract (salary according to The Telegraph this week) and it was said that United weren't willing to offer a significant increase in wages to keep him at the club for fear of setting "a dangerous precedent" after only just stabilising the club's finances. Ba's first season at Newcastle saw him score 16 Premier League goals in 32 appearances for the club, though his strikes had dried up since the arrival of Papiss Cisse in February.
