Newcastle Wanted Berahino Before They Signed Mitrovic
The English striker could have been signed before the Aleksandar Mitrovic deal went through.
Newcastle United were close to making a £20 million offer for West Bromwich Albion's Saido Berahino, according to the Mail.
The English striker is now stuck at the Baggies after his deal to Tottenham Hotspur broke down on deadline day after Spurs' fourth bid for the player was rejected.
But, the report claims that the Magpies were interested in Berahino as their number one striker target earlier in the summer and were in advanced talks with the 22-year-old's agent, Aidy Ward.
The player then switched agents meaning that Newcastle's interest faded and they ended up signing Aleksandar Mitrovic for £13 million.
Reports claim that former agent, Ward had convinced the Magpies to put together a bid of £20 million for the striker. It's unclear if that bid would have been expected as it is reported that Tottenham's £23 million bid was turned down on transfer deadline day.
Berahino tweeted that he will never play for West Brom again and it will be interesting to see if Newcastle regain their interest in the player in January.
