Norwich vs Everton - 5 Key Battles

By Oliver Leadbeater /

Everton's first game of the season at Carrow Road is a start of a new era for the Merseyside club. For the first time in over a decade they will take to the field with a man other than David Moyes at the helm. Roberto Martinez has a huge job on his hands as he takes over a club that has majorly overachieved in previous years. Martinez has made several recruitments, with former Wigan players Arouna Kone, Antolin Alcaraz and Joel Robles. Plus Gerard Deulofeu from Barcelona on loan who could be a real find. Norwich had a topsy-turvy campaign last season, with a long unbeaten run in the league a high point but then long spells without a win. The main problem last season was scoring, Hughton has hopefully addressed that with Dutch Striker Ricky Van Wolfswinkel and England hopeful Gary Hooper joining this summer. This season opener is vital for both teams to prove something and get some early points on the board. Here are 5 key battles that could decide the outcome of the match.

5. Arouna Koné vs Michael Turner

Koné has made quite an impact in his first season in English football as he was integral in the Wigan team that won the FA Cup. With Jelavi‡ looking nothing like his former self, Koné will surely be man Martinez trusts to get him the goals. Michael Turner is an accomplished defender and last season built a good understanding with Sebastien Bassong. He will be dealt what could be a stern test by Arouna Koné as the Ivorian will be determined to open his account for his new club and also he will do his normal style of tireless running. However last season Koné finishing at times was decisively suspect, wasting many opportunities. This might mean even Koné can get past Turner and the Norwich defence he may not be able to capitalise on it.
