Premier League: 10 Best Transfer Bargains of 2012

By Rion Barker /

5. Clint Dempsey (Tottenham, £6 million)

Another saga that lasted until the dying moments of the transfer window, the American had flirted with Liverpool all summer but ultimately joined Spurs in the dying minutes of the transfer window. Maybe because Liverpool allegedly only offered £3 million, which Fulham were unwilling to accept (£6 million was already cheap enough, don't take the piss). Maybe it's because Dempsey saw that Liverpool had spent £12 million on Fabio Borini, and laughed his way to London. Either way, it's Tottenham who have come up trumps with this bargain, making up for their overspending on Dembele, who cost them £15 million. In Dempsey, Tottenham have an attacking midfielder-cum-centre forward, who ended last season as Fulham's top scorer and as one of the most picked players in fantasy football. I should know, I had him. With Modric and Van der Vaart going the other way, Dempsey should get a fair amount of game time, and should also be expected to plug the goalscoring gap if history is anything to go by. Rating: 9/10 Liverpool's loss.
