Rangers Transfers: 10 Players They Must Sign This Summer

By Jamie Kennedy /

5. Lewis Buxton

Alongside speed in attack, Rangers biggest weakness is in defence, which is exactly why they should be looking at players who can play right across the back line. That's something Lewis Buxton regularly had to do whilst playing with Sheffield Wednesday, as the defensive mix was often shuffled, meaning he played everywhere from wing back to smack bang in the middle of defence. It's quite the surprise that Wednesday have taken the decision to release the 31-year old, who signed in 2008 from Stoke City after a well-received loan spell at Hillsborough. One of 11 players sent packing, the defender represents a degree of mobility in defence, something Rangers clearly lack at times, being outpaced by even the most unfit-looking of strikers. Buxton could add some pace at the back for the Gers, and he's clearly a popular figure with supporters - in 2013, the man was voted as Sheffield Wednesday's player of the season by fans, who recognised just how much flexibility he added to the back line. That's something Rangers need, and Buxton would come on the cheap, only needing a wage packet and signing on fee to secure his services.
