One of the leading juvenile races at Royal Ascot, the Coventry Stakes has been won by some brilliant horses over the years, including Dawn Approach last year. The 2013 renewal of the Coventry could be won by another Irish horse and one that has plotted an almost identical course to Dawn Approach en route to this race at that. Aidan OBriens Stubbs (7/2) has been impressive so far this season and already looks like he could be tough to beat in the Coventry. When you consider that at this early point in the season there is still a lot of guesswork involved with establishing the juvenile hierarchy that speaks volumes. Stubbs won the same listed race Dawn Approach took before crossing the Irish Sea to win the Coventry last time out and hed previously annihilated a twelve-strong field at Navan. He made his debut, like Dawn Approach, in the first juvenile race of the Irish flat season but unlike his 2000 Guineas-winning counterpart he met defeat in that race at the hands of the useful looking Saburo. Stubbs seems to be progressing with every run though and I think hell go very close again here. Dangers lurk throughout the field though, not least potentially from his own stable with Coach House (8/1), War Command (12/1) and Sir John Hawkins (9/1) all having looked above average thus far and liable to take their chance here too. Another juvenile that has already left a substantial impression on me though is Richard Hannons Thunder Strike (10/1). He won really well at Epsom on the Derby undercard in the Woodcote Stakes bounding out and making all. The same team sent out Olympic Glory to chase home Dawn Approach in this last year and I fancy them to send out the runner-up to a potential Irish superstar again here twelve months on.
