Spurs: Jan Vertonghen Predicts Six-Way Title Scrap

By K.J. Stewart /

Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has expressed his surprise at how this season's Premier League has started, admitting that he didn't think Arsenal and Liverpool would be doing as well as they are. He had this to say:
"Before the beginning of the season, everybody would have said Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City and maybe us. "But now we see Arsenal at the top and Liverpool third and you have to take them as favourites as well. We have six favourites and Everton are doing very well, too."
The Belgian's claims that a six-way battle (possibly even seven, hinting at Everton being a threat) indicates that we could be in for an exciting season - much more so in terms of title battles than in recent years. Spurs fans will be pleased to hear that Vertonghen believes his own team are in with a chance at winning the Premier League title, though it's no surprise after their excellent start to the season - particular in the defensive area where Vertonghen plies his trade. The Lilywhites have still only conceded five goals in eight league games - and five goals in thirteen competitive games in total - and currently lie in fifth place in the Premier League, three points behind leaders Arsenal, while they have progressed in the League Cup and are doing very well in the Europa League. Of the teams mentioned by Vertonghen, it would seem Spurs are in as good a position as any of them and the defender has every right to be confident of his team's chances.
