Sunderland Midfielder Misses Match For Baby's Birth

And Advocaat is looking forward to having a full crop of players at his disposal.

Jack Rodwell missed the first game of Sunderland's pre-season after his wife gave birth to their child, though he is expected to travel across the Atlantic for the Black Cats' tour. The 24-year-old midfielder was a notable absentee at Heritage Park, as injured duo Costel Pantilimon and Jordi Gomez were both spotted enjoying the game from the stands despite being unable to play. John O€™Shea, Seb Larsson, Steven Fletcher and Duncan Watmore will also feature in America after being given extended breaks due to international fixtures, but Advocaat can't wait to have them back. The Sunderland boss told SAFC.com: €œJack€™s wife had a baby so that is the reason he wasn€™t there, but he was back in training this morning. Costel and Jordi were both at the game yesterday which is good because it shows they want to be a part of it. €œCostel is already training with the goalkeeping coach and Jordi is outside with the physio, but both look good and they€™re heading in the right way. It was important for the international players to have a break because they needed it, but they€™re back today and there will be more competition so everything feels like it€™s getting closer and closer which I like to see. €œEverybody has to show to us that they want to play because there will hopefully be more competition in the squad than last year.€
