This was more than just a derby fixture. 

At kick off, Sunderland had played eight games, lost seven, and picked up just a solitary point from the other.

Newcastle was just what the team and the crowd needed to bring the club back to life. SAFC got off to a glorious start as Fletcher nodded in a Johnson cross to give the red and whites the lead.
