Icelandic new signing joined as the club are set for big things this season

New Tottenham Hotspur signing Gylfi Sigurdsson has backed new manager Andre Villas-Boas after the Iceland midfielder reportedly turned down an offer from Liverpool to complete his transfer to White Hart Lane yesterday. The Icelandic midfielder, who spent last year on loan at Swansea, had been linked with a permanent move to the Swans before Brendan Rodgers left, and then subsequently to Anfield to join the manager. But mounting speculation on the player's future ended abruptly yesterday when AVB's Spurs confirmed the signing of the 22-year-old from Hoffenheim on a reported five-year contract. The midfielder, who impressed with some attractive attacking player and a good goal return last season, is the first player to join the new Spurs after the departure of Harry Redknapp earlier in the summer. Sigurdsson spoke to Icelandic website mbl.is to state that he chose Spurs as the Tottenham powers that be persuaded him that the club are destined for great things under their new manager:
"'I enjoyed playing under Brendan and I am grateful for everything he has done for me, but after careful consideration I liked Spurs best. The team has world-class players in their ranks and they play good football, which I like. I was impressed with the club's plans for next season and the coming years. "There is clearly great ambition at Tottenham and the club intends to do big things. It is a pleasure to see that Gareth Bale has signed a new contract. There are top players in the team and the club is getting a new training ground."
Sigurdsson has also already spoken to his new boss Andre Villas-Boas, and confirmed he is looking forward to working under the Portuguese who was sacked from Chelsea after a disappointing start to his career in England last year:
"I like him and the ideas he has. He has faith in me and I'm looking forward to working under his leadership."
The Icelandic midfielder joined Swansea on loan last season from German club Hoffenheim and scored seven goals in 19 appearances for the Welsh side.
