UFC 174 Results: 10 Things We Learned

10. MMA Is A Dangerous, Dangerous Sport With Seriously Tough Athletes

UFC 174 saw no less than three vicious injuries take place in the ring. Not as vicious as Anderson Silva's leg break, or Cung Le breaking Frank Shamrock's arm, perhaps, but still vicious. On the undercard, Valerie Letourneau appeared to suffer a broken orbital bone early on in her fight against Elizabeth Phillips, but carried on through the fight to claim a split decision win in what was essentially a three-round war. By the end, her eye had nearly swollen shut. In the main card opener, Ryan Jimmo called out that his arm was broken as Ovince St. Preux worked on a Kimura in the second round, ending their fight. And in the very next match, Brendan Schaub may have suffered a break as well, in this case to his jaw. Three possible breaks in a single card. And two of those three saw the injured fighter keep fighting to the end of the match. MMA is not for the weak of heart, that's for sure. Plenty of safeguards are in place, of course, with doctors cageside, and refs who are trained to stop the fight whenever necessary, but it was still a rough night for injures. Full credit to Jimmo, Letourneau, and Schaub for enduring it all.
