World Cup 2014: 5 Southampton Players Who Could Represent England

By James Kent /

2. Jay Rodriguez

Jay Rodriguez is another one of those that surprisingly received a call-up to the England squad recently, but we can€™t say that he didn€™t deserve it for his form this season. Some would even go as far to say that Rodriguez deserves to be higher in the pecking order than Lambert based on age and his performances this season. The forward is a former Burnley player and is just 24 years old, so England could look forward to seeing him for a number of years. In terms of this season, the player has managed to find the net on six occasions during league games €“ which makes him the club€™s leading scorer. He has also managed to produce such results from only 2.3 shots per game, showing that he is also more efficient that Lambert. Rodriguez currently only has a small amount of international football with one appearance for the U21 squad, and this season€™s debut for the full national side. I personally think it€™s highly unlikely that Hodgson would take both Rodriguez and Lambert to the World Cup, so may have to decide which one to take. It may well be that Rodriguez gets the nod because of his younger age meaning that he could play for the England side for a longer period.
