Paul Dummett's 90th minute deflected strike rescued a point for Newcastle, who are now within one point of 18th placed Swansea City in the Barclays Premier League relegation battle. Wayne Rooney's controversial penalty and Jesse Lingard's neat finish put Man Utd 2-0 up on the night. However, the home side battled back thanks to an instinctive finish from Georginio Wijnaldum followed up by an Aleksandar Mitrovic spot kick. Rooney's second looked to have won it for Louis van Gaal's side but Dummett salvaged the draw with what should be the best goal of his career. The point, and three goals, represents a huge improvement for Steve McClaren's men who had lost their previous four games by one goal to nil. It also represents an upturn in fortunes for Manchester United somewhat. Even though they surrendered a two-goal lead, they managed to score three on the road in the midst of speculation about their manager's future, following a prolonged period of "boring football." Considering the circumstances both teams found themselves in before kick-off, this game was weird. There's no other word for it. Here are 18 moments that left the 49,673 inside St James' Park with their jaws on the floor...
18. Jonjo Shelvey Signs Before Kick Off
There's a modicum of befuddlement about this transfer in general before you even take into consideration Untied splashed £12 million on a proven Premier League player. Somehow, they managed to seal the deal before the game had even kicked off. The first images of Shelvey arriving for his medical emerged at around 1pm on Tuesday meaning that he passed that and agreed a contract in four hours or so; remarkably rapid considering some of the drawn out sagas we've all seen over the course of the Premier League era. Maybe he is a wizard... (Unashamed Voldemort reference)
